Fiji amateur boxing selectors will look at the boxers from Police and Army teams in the Sukuna Bowl Challenge before selecting the final squad for the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu.
Coach Napoleon Taumeopeau said Fijian boxers stood a good chance to win gold medals over the other Pacific Island countries.
“We have not made the final selection for the games yet since we have to follow the FASANOC’s selection criteria which stage that we have to look at the boxers in the Sukuna Bowl Challenge,” he said.
“We will take a few of the fighters who competed in the National Boxing Championships.”
He said the coaches would work with the boxers to improve them before the Games.
“A lot of fighters are showing a ring rust and it is caused by lack of competitions. It is that we do not have competitions in Fiji, but it is about the gap and the experience level in Fiji,” he said.
“The elite fighters unable to get fights here and for example, Winston Hill had traveled aboard and fought 10 fights overseas and he has fought one fight in Fiji. There is no one to fight him and most of the elite boxers do not have the same opportunities as Winston have with him, ” he said.
