Sports drink distributor Rafimex General Trading Company Limited presented 10 cartons of Lucozade drinks and an undisclosed amount of money to members of Ghana’s amateur boxing team, the Black Bombers, last Friday in Accra.
According to Mr. Sameer Thakkar, the Chief Executive Officer of Rafimex, the donation was to support a three-man boxing contingent that will represent Ghana at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in The Bahamas from July 19 to 23.
He said the presentation was in response to a call for support by the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF).
“As an avid boxing fan, I decided to support the boxers to bring honor to the nation,” Thakkar said (pictured right). “I am a keen follower of the sport and Ghana’s history in boxing suggests that with the needed support, the amateur fighters could make all of us proud by winning medals at international events.”
The President of the GABF, Mr. George Lamptey, who received the items on behalf of the team, expressed gratitude to Rafimex for the support, adding that the products and the money would motivate the boxers to win medals for the nation.
Mr. Lamptey noted that the GBF was cash-strapped which resulted in the Black Bombers’ absence from the African championships in Congo.
The Bombers will be represented at the Games by Alfred Kotey (bantamweight) and Philip Quartey (lightweight) and accompanied by coach Vincent Akai Nettey.
