CHESAPEAKE- It was another successful weekend for the The Zanesville Police Athletic League boxing team on Saturday night at the Chesapeake Community Center.
Jamall Norris was matched with Donald Tinchen, of Huntington, West Virgnia, in the 15-16-year-old 154-pound boys division. Tinchen came out firing and Norris picked up the speed quickly, unleashing several flurries of heavy shots.
Norris eventually knocked down Tinchen twice before the referee stopped the bout. Norris won by technical knockout and cinched his fourth win of his amateur career at the PAL. Robert Guest also made the trip and was unable to be matched. He assisted the team effort working Norris’ corner.
Norris and Guest are preparing with other Zanesville youth boxers to compete at the 43rd National Police Athletic League Championships, set for June in California. The week-long event will draw about 400 of the nation’s best amateur boxers, and past Zanesville champions of the National PAL include Travis Jerig, Akeem Mayle and Conner Wade.
Plans to continue the summer tour include the 20th anniversary celebration during the week of the Fourth of July holiday of Zanesville PAL. They include a Summer Slug-out Challenge, Power X national weightlifting qualifier and the Spirit of Freedom Boxing show at the PAL facility, located at 804 Pine Street.
The Zanesville PAL is currently accepting new members and more information is available by calling 740-450-8245. Beginner boxer orientations are held weekly at 6 p.m. on Mondays.
